Since the genocide of 1994 Rwanda has progressed enormously, and with approximately half of the world’s mountain gorillas accessible through the Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda’s tourism is booming. Shake off your memories of war and expect a warm and friendly welcome to a beautiful country.

Genocide Memorials in Rwanda

  • Murambi Genocide Memorial Center, Gikongor: This site has been preserved in memory of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide that took almost 1,000,000 lives while the world stood by and watched. The Memorial Center is located in an old secondary school near the town of Gikongoro in the South-west section of Rwanda approximately 30 minutes with a car from the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda (I.N.M.R.) in Butare.
  • Nyarubuye Genocide Memorial, Kibungo: The Nyarubuye Genocide Memorial is located about 35 kilometers from the southern town of Kibungo. Located in the Kirehe district, this church and its accompanying school are a reminder of the horrific violence that took place at this site during Rwanda’s 1994 genocide.
  • Nyamata Genocide Memorial, Kigali: Located in the Bugasera region, this church and its contents are a reminder of the horrifying violence that took place at this site during Rwanda’s 1994 genocide.
  • Bisesero Genocide Memorial, Kibuye: The Bisesero Genocide Memorial is located about 31 kilometers from the lake side town of Kibuye. The beautiful mountain setting with breathtaking views of Lake Kivu is in sharp contrast to the horrifying violence that took place at this site during Rwanda’s 1994 genocide.
